Earth's Gentle Skin

Earth is the only planet in our solar system where life flourishes across land and sea. In contrast, Venus, despite its similar size, is completely barren. Locked beneath a thick blanket of carbon dioxide ($\text{CO}_2$) capped by dense clouds of sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid, Venus experiences a runaway greenhouse effect. Its surface temperature soars above $400^\circ\text{C}$—even hotter than Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun.

Earth’s primordial atmosphere was also primarily composed of nitrogen ($\text{N}_2$) and carbon dioxide ($\text{CO}_2$). Today, however, it consists chiefly of nitrogen and oxygen ($\text{O}_2$). This monumental transformation began in the ancient oceans during the Precambrian era. The emergence of photosynthetic organisms, such as cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), began absorbing atmospheric $\text{CO}_2$ and releasing oxygen ($\text{O}_2$). As oxygen accumulated, it formed the ozone layer ($\text{O}_3$) in the upper atmosphere. This solar shield absorbed harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, making it safe for life to finally migrate from the oceans onto land.

The proliferation of terrestrial plants accelerated $\text{CO}_2$ drawdown. Atmospheric $\text{CO}_2$ concentrations, which peaked near 7,000 ppmv in the early Paleozoic era, plummeted below 1,000 ppmv during the Carboniferous period as massive forests carpeted the earth. By the Cenozoic era, when humans appeared, $\text{CO}_2$ levels had dropped to approximately 300 ppmv.
